Cameroon imports more than 90% of its pharmaceutical products. Therefore, the government has taken a series of measures aimed at developing the pharmaceutical industry, a sector that boasts enormous potential.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The country has a huge local market, which the manufacturing sector should leverage to develop an integrated and competitive value chain. The local pharmaceutical industry accounts for only 21.3 billion of the market. In 2021, 931 billion of the drugs consumed in Cameroon were imported (801 billion for medical devices).<\/p>\n

Most of the units created are operating at 20% of their production capacity, particularly due to counterfeiting and products from China or India. Faced with this unfair competition, the local market should be protected by supporting imports of equivalent locally manufactured products with the production capacities of national operators. The very high rate of imports of pharmaceutical products is justified by the importation of raw materials, the difficulties in obtaining marketing authorizations (MA), access to financing and the issue of exporting products.<\/p>\n

Faced with this situation, a series of measures has been taken by the Ministry of Public Health to boost the production of local medicines: streamlining the procedures for issuing marketing authorizations for locally manufactured products, reducing the time taken to issue approvals; promoting frank dialogue between wholesalers and manufacturers for commercial and financial agreements to enable the viability of the local industry; promoting the production and use of local raw materials, as well as promoting the local pharmaceutical industry, by defining order quotas by wholesalers (70\/30).<\/p>\n

Local drug production units are beginning to produce high-quality, affordable medications for the population. Established in January 2017, Tebimosa Pharmaceuticals is a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility dedicated to providing access to affordable, high-quality medications and medical products for children, women, and men in Africa, particularly for the most vulnerable groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cinpharm is the only industrial site in the region structured into three separate manufacturing units.<\/p>\n

Cameroonian company AD Pharma, active in the large-scale distribution of pharmaceutical and paramedical products, aims to set up a production unit for medicines, medical consumables, cosmetics, and dietary products in Douala. The investment is expected to involve 7 billion CFA francs. AD Pharma's project fits perfectly with the import-substitution policy implemented by the Cameroonian government since 2021, aimed not only at limiting the country's dependence on imports but also at developing a robust local industrial base.<\/p>\n

The pharmaceutical initiative anchored in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) led by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) aims to support African countries in facilitating the supply of pharmaceutical products as well as strengthening the productive capacities of local pharmaceutical industries that are still embryonic. The development of the local pharmaceutical industry is a real opportunity for Cameroon's integration into the AfCFTA. The ECA is already providing technical support for the updating and implementation of Cameroon's Industrial Development Plan (IDP) as part of the country's structural transformation.<\/p>\n
