(PABPS) is the country&#039;s main river port, handling 951 TEUs of national river traffic. These rivers are navigable as far as the border with the Central African Republic. The Congo River is the second largest in the world after the Amazon by volume. The navigable river network spans 7,276 km, of which 5,200 km comprise the international network and 2,076 km the domestic network.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39986 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/afrique.yearbook-media.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Capture-decran-2024-03-06-190737.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"176\">The inland river network includes the following waterways: the L\u00e9fini, the Likouala Mossaka, the Likouala aux Herbes, the Alima, the Kouyou, the Ibenga, and the Motaba. Despite this extensive network of waterways, river transport remains a weak link in the multimodal transport chain.<\/p>\n<p>The Port Authority of Brazzaville (PABS), the body responsible for managing traffic and the use of the country&#039;s river and secondary ports (Ouesso, Ngomb\u00e9, Mossaka, Impfondo, Oyo, Makoua, Boundji, Etoumbi, and Owando), is experiencing a difficult financial situation. This is due in particular to the decline in traffic on the Congo River caused by the ongoing silting up of the ports and by competition from unregulated ports upstream of the Port of Brazzaville. Because of its shallow draft, especially at the Port of Brazzaville and particularly during the dry season, the Congo River is only navigable for six to seven months a year. The shipyard&#039;s construction will provide Congo with a state-owned shipowner for ship maintenance and repair, supporting the Port of Brazzaville and secondary ports. The shipyard was sold by the Congolese government to a private investor for 100 billion CFA francs.<\/p>\n<p>Another large-scale initiative, essential for the river transport chain, is the relocation of the shipyard from its former site in downtown Brazzaville. The new technical facilities will have the advantage of covering a large area and being equipped with more modern equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The development of the river economy depends in part on the establishment of structures dedicated to the construction, repair, and maintenance of watercraft.
