As the main mode of transport for people and goods, road transport provides nearly 90% of domestic demand for passenger transport and nearly 75% of demand for freight transport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The road therefore presents itself as a real opportunity for economic and sociocultural development. As a result, road transport makes a substantial contribution to the fight against poverty. Cameroon has nearly 230,000 kilometers of main roads, 4,300 of which are paved and well-maintained, although traffic is often disrupted by heavy goods vehicles and untimely tolls. In 2022, 860 kilometers of road and 460 linear meters of engineering structures were built or rehabilitated.<\/p>\n

\"\"Three Trans-African Highways are part of the Cameroonian road network: Trans-African Highway No. 3 crosses Cameroon from North to South. It connects the capital Yaound\u00e9 to N'Djamena in Chad and Brazzaville in Congo via Berberati in the Central African Republic over a distance of 1,517 km; Trans-African Highway No. 5 connects Dakar in Senegal to N'Djamena in Chad, crossing the northern tip for about 110 km from the town of Fotokol to Kouss\u00e9ri; Trans-African Highway No. 8 crosses the southern part of Cameroon and connects Bangui in the CAR to the East and Lagos in Nigeria to the West. It is 1,044 km long. Most of Cameroon's trade with neighboring countries, as well as landlocked countries such as Chad and the CAR, takes place via these three roads. Goods transport in Cameroon is mainly carried out by truck. An inter-state convention on road transport of various goods (CIETRMD) was signed by the CEMAC countries in 1996.<\/p>\n

President Paul Biya announced that 2023 will see the commissioning of the Cross River Bridge between Cameroon and Nigeria, as well as the completion of the paving of the road section between Sangmelima and Brazzaville, thus opening Cameroon to the markets of neighboring states. The paving of the Lena-Tibati-Ngatt road section on National Road No. 15 will have the advantage of increasing land connections between the northern and southern regions of the country. Construction of the Bertoua-Batouri road will be extended to Yokadouma and beyond. Finally, the construction of the Kribi-Lolab\u00e9 highway and the Grand Zambi-Kribi road will strengthen the competitiveness of the Port Autonome de Kribi.<\/span><\/p>\n

In December 2022, the African Development Bank (AfDB) reiterated to the Cameroonian government its commitment to financially supporting the country in its road investment programs. The government intends to contract out road maintenance but also to implement its new sustainability strategy for earth roads, which make up more than 93% of the national road network. This strategy will be accompanied by governance measures with great rigor in the execution of works, strict compliance with specifications, and increased network monitoring and emergency response.<\/p>\n
