Mining companies are thus encouraged to adopt a management approach that effectively integrates economic, environmental, and social considerations into their operations, aiming to create long-term benefits for stakeholders and ensure the support, cooperation, and trust of the local communities in which the company operates. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, \u00aba mining project that is developed, operated, and closed with ecological and social acceptability could be considered as contributing to sustainable development.\u00bb Sustainable development therefore seeks to reconcile economic and social progress with the preservation of the environment, considered a heritage to be passed on to future generations. <\/p>\n

To regulate investment in the mining sector, the Republic of Congo adopted a mining code in April 2005. This mining code establishes attractive conditions and sets out a clear framework for agreements concerning mineral exploration and exploitation. Book 2 of the mining code, in articles 102 and following, defines the specific rights and obligations related to mining operations, industrial safety, hygiene, environmental protection, and administrative oversight. Congo's sustainable development policy generates significant inequalities between, on the one hand, powerful corporations, and on the other hand, local populations and stakeholders who are ill-prepared to embrace sustainable development as an end in itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The government encourages private investment through various legislative tools and plays a monitoring and oversight role in mining activities within a clear, transparent, and non-discriminatory framework. These objectives are also enshrined in legislation that establishes the principle of ensuring a balance between the development of productive activities and environmental management, the essential role of which is to guarantee the stability of production systems. Mining companies are thus expected to integrate these concerns into their daily operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
