During oil production, gas and water are present. Currently, the water is treated and returned to the environment, while the gas is flared. Gabon aims to optimize the use of natural gas within its borders in order to generate electricity from this flared gas. This transition will transform how oil fields are operated and allow for the capture of butane gas within these fields, enabling production in larger quantities and eliminating the need for imports, thereby reducing the cost of butane gas. In Port-Gentil, 1001 TEUs of the electricity supplying the city is generated from gas from oil fields that was previously used for flaring.
