The laying of the METISS (MElting poT Indianoceanic Submarine System) submarine cable began in early June 2020. The operation is being carried out by the CS Teliri, the cable-laying vessel of Elettra, the Italian subsidiary of Orange Marine.<\/p>\n

The operation, which began in Madagascar, will continue in Mauritius and R\u00e9union. The telecommunications infrastructure is expected to be commissioned in the last quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n

An initiative of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), this cable is supported by ten telecom operators: Emtel and CEB FiberNet of Mauritius; Canal + Telecom, SFR and Zeop of R\u00e9union; Telco OI (Only) of Mayotte; Blueline, Airtel and Telma of Madagascar; and Belgacom International Carrier Services. They signed the construction and management agreement for this new very high-speed cable in 2016 and 2017. With a length of 3,500 kilometers, the METISS cable offers a capacity of 24 Tbps.<\/span><\/p>\n

The result of a total investment of approximately \u20ac40 million, METISS was built by Alcatel Submarine Networks and Elettra TLC SPA. Once fully deployed, it is expected to be connected to other international cables. This cable will significantly improve connectivity and contribute to the advent of 5G technology in Madagascar.<\/p>\n
