The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has initiated projects aimed at developing several localities in the country through the deployment of new road infrastructure. Authorities plan to build new roads as part of a massive $1.6 billion development project. The targeted road projects involve the rehabilitation and paving of several road sections covering more than 1,300 km. The government is continuing construction work on the Dolisie-Kibangou-Gabon border road, with the bridge over the Niari already fully completed. With support from the African Development Bank (AfDB), work on development corridor No. 13, Ouesso-Border with the CAR, is underway, with the construction of the first section of the bridge over the Sangha River, Ouesso-Pokola. An agreement has been ratified for the construction of the Brazzaville-Kinshasa road-rail bridge between the two heads of state of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n

Kikwit and Lukaka, two agricultural areas of the country, have benefited from two road development projects, opening them up and improving the daily lives of the populations: the Batshamba-Thiskapa road, Lovua-Tshikapa section (56 km) and the Tshikapa-Mbuji Mayi road, Tshikapa-Kamuesha section (87 km). Both projects were carried out in rural areas between Lovua and Katshongo (47 km) and in the town of Tshikapa (9 km), for a total length of 56 kilometers for the Lovu-Tshikapa section. In addition, the development of 87 kilometers concerned the Tshikapa-Kamuesha section in the provinces of Kasai (central and eastern). <\/p>\n

Approved in 2012 by the Executive Directors of the African Development Bank Group, the first project, which is due to be completed in 2022, received $99.3 million in concessional financing from the African Development Fund. The second, approved in 2014 and also due to be completed in 2022, received $105.8 million in support from the Bank Group. Thanks to this work, the population lives less than two kilometers from an all-season road. <\/p>\n

In 2022, the DRC completed a 400-kilometer road rehabilitation project in the city of Bunia, in Ituri province. The project was carried out with funding from the Social Fund of the Republic. The project's implementation helped open up certain neighborhoods and facilitate traffic flow in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022, the government signed a concession contract with Ged Africa Ltd. for the construction of a road linking it to Zambia. This road will connect the town of Kasuomeno, in the DRC, to Nshwale, in Zambia. The new road will also pass through the Congolese towns of Kasenga and Mwenda. 11 kilometers of road between Kasuomeno and Kasenga have already been completed. The $750 million infrastructure will be financed to the tune of 25%, or $250 million, by Ged Africa Ltd. The remaining funds will come from private investors. The "build-operate-transfer" project between Ged Africa, the DRC, and Zambia will span 25 years.<\/p>\n

Compared to the average condition of the Congolese road network, National Road 1 (RN1) crossing Greater Katanga was in good condition. However, it has been rehabilitated in its Mbuji-Mayi\u2013Kamina section (Kasai-Oriental and Haut-Lomami), as has National Road 2 from Mbuji-Mayi to Bukavu, in South Kivu.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

An agreement was also signed with a Portuguese company for the paving of 138 km of road on the Kindu-Katopa section, which will link two economically dynamic regions of the country. The project is financed by the African Development Bank.<\/p>\n

The road fund will be increased to ensure efficient maintenance of the network.<\/p>\n

THE TSHILEJELU PROJECT\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0As part of the accelerated program to combat poverty and inequality initiated by the President of the Republic, the Tshilejelu project was set up to facilitate mobility in the major urban areas of the Greater Kasai area on the one hand and to provide the city of Kinshasa with certain works on the other. This program for the rehabilitation and modernization of urban roads was launched on March 17, 2021 by the President of the Republic in the Mpasa district in the commune of N'sele in Kinshasa. Concerning 39.72 kilometers of urban roads in Kinshasa, it also targets the Grand Kasa\u00ef area with the rehabilitation of 101.77 km. Certain towns are particularly concerned such as Mbuji-Mayi (25.32 km), Kabinda (10.5 km), Lusambo (10 km), Kananga (35 km), Mwene Ditu (5.5 km) and Tshikapa (15.39 km).\u00a0<\/p>\n

These works should last 28 months for Kinshasa and 36 months for the Grand Kasa\u00ef Space.\u00a0<\/p>\n
