The project site is located 70 kilometers northeast of the capital Yaound\u00e9. The dam, built on the Sanaga River, will be 1.455 km long and the intake canal will be 3.3 km long. The development, construction, and operation of this hydroelectric facility is the responsibility of the Cameroonian company Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC), owned 40% by EDF. The project cost is \u20ac1.2 billion. EDF Cameroon and the EDF Hydro Hydraulic Engineering Center are providing assistance to the project owner, NHPC. Approximately 3,500 people are working on the construction of this facility, which, with its 420 MW, will be the most powerful hydroelectric facility in the country. Started in 2019, the dam will, once commissioned, provide electricity to a third of Cameroon&#039;s population.<\/p>\n<p>French energy production and distribution company EDF is seeking to raise more than \u20ac991.6 million (650 billion CFA francs) for the construction of a second hydroelectric dam in Kikot, on the Sanaga River. The Kikot project includes a dam and water reservoir, as well as a hydroelectric power plant, which will be Cameroon&#039;s largest electricity generating facility (between 450 and 550 MW).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the dam is expected to begin in 2025. The project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2022, the first private hydroelectric power plant of less than 5 MW was inaugurated in the village of Mbakaou. This project, supported by the French Fund for the Global Environment (FFEM), is helping to pave the way for the energy transition in the country. Located in the Adamawa region, this plant provides renewable electricity to 40,000 rural residents. This model is intended to be replicated and adopted by Cameroonian developers. Cameroon has therefore launched a program to build 50 other mini-hydroelectric power plants.<\/p>\n<p>This strategy, supported by a public-private partnership, should lead to a better quality of electricity service, a reduction in production costs as well as budgetary savings. Similarly, on the environmental level and with the shutdown of thermal power plants, the construction and commissioning of these facilities will contribute at the national level to the fight against climate change, Cameroon having set itself the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030.
