The DRC has a strong potential for hydroelectric power production. Thanks to the power of the Congo River, the second largest river in terms of flow, the country can count on an estimated hydroelectric potential of 100,000 MW, the highest in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

While the Congolese energy sector currently boasts 991 TEUs of hydroelectric potential, this resource, like others, remains underexploited. The Congo River, with its basin straddling the Equator, offers the DRC an estimated 100,000 MW of exploitable energy potential, distributed across 780 sites in 145 territories and 76,000 villages. This represents approximately 371 TEUs of Africa's total potential and nearly 61 TEUs of the world's. Despite government efforts to launch hydroelectric development programs and harness the power of the numerous rivers in the Congo Basin, the current exploitation rate of these resources remains below 31 TEUs, demonstrating significant untapped opportunities.<\/p>\n

Despite this potential, the mining industry alone has a gap of 700 MW and spent over $600 million in 2020 importing electricity from neighboring countries.<\/p>\n

To date, out of an installed capacity of approximately 2,677 MW, the operational generation capacity is around 1,130 MW, of which more than 901 MW are controlled by the National Electricity Company (SNEL), which struggles to meet the country's needs, with a service coverage rate of only 91 MW. This energy gap represents a bottleneck for the development of the mining sector and the economy as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

The completion of the Kakobola hydroelectric power plant is expected before the end of April 2023.<\/p>\n

The government's commitment was demonstrated by the recent liberalization of the electricity sector in 2020, opening the market for generation, transmission, and distribution. A number of private operators are concentrated in mining areas where demand is well-established, such as Katanga, Kivu, Kinshasa, and Mbuji-Mayi. Furthermore, the DRC's geostrategic position and the interconnections of its grids with SAPP (Zambia), EAPP (CPGL), and PEAC (Brazzaville) allow for the export of its electricity to several countries. This is the vision behind the Grand Inga Dam project on the Congo River, located 200 kilometers from Kinshasa.<\/p>\n
