The Congo has an estimated hydroelectric potential of over 22,000 MW. For hydroelectric power alone, the country has an estimated potential of 22,000 megawatts, but only 3,100,000 are currently operational. Two new hydroelectric dams at Morala and Nyanga in the south of the country will be built through a public-private partnership (PPP) signed in May 2022 by the government with a consortium of two private companies. These two new hydroelectric dams will have a combined capacity of 331 megawatts. The first, named Morala, will produce 230 megawatts, while the second, called Nyanga, is estimated at 101 megawatts.<\/p>\n

The agreement also includes the complete rehabilitation of the Liouesso hydroelectric dam, in the Sangha department, with a capacity of 19 megawatts, inaugurated in 2017 by the Head of State.<\/p>\n

Selected in May 2021 to conduct the studies, construction, and commissioning of the Chollet Dam (600 MW) under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model, the Chinese firm China Gezhouba Group has had its contract terminated by Cameroon and Congo, the two countries jointly managing the project. The government cites as the reason for this decision the contractor's desire to carry out the project under an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model, rather than the BOT model initially agreed upon by the parties. A major integration project in the CEMAC zone (Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Chad, Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea), the Chollet hydroelectric dam was to be built on the Dja River, which forms the river border between Cameroon and Congo. The commissioning of this energy infrastructure was intended to address the energy deficit of these two countries, as well as those of neighboring countries such as the Central African Republic and Gabon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Studies for the construction of the Sounda dam, which will be able to generate up to 1000 MW, have begun. The project is progressing as a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contract, under a concession agreement with a Chinese company (China Roadwails Twenty) which has already been awarded the contract.<\/p>\n
