However, Cameroon is making very little use of this equipment to develop its telecoms sector, as well as that of the Central African sub-region, according to a report by the World Bank subsidiary, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), on the state of the digital sector in the country.<\/p>\n

Only about 15% of the SAT3 cable capacity and 30% of the WACS cable capacity have reportedly been used since their launch 17 years ago. This IFC revelation sheds light on the Memorandum of Understanding signed on July 14, 2021, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, between Camtel, Cameroon's incumbent telecoms operator, and MTN GlobalConnect.<\/p>\n

Through this agreement, Camtel, which holds a monopoly on fiber optic management in Cameroon, allows MTN GlobalConnect to market four submarine fiber optic cables to which the country is connected. This is so as not only to make these infrastructures profitable, but also to contribute to the development of the digital sector in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

MTN GlobalConnect will deploy its international sales force to support Camtel in the marketing of its four submarine cables in Cameroon and the subregion, including: SAT3, WACS, NCSCS and the SAIL submarine cable which connects Cameroon to Brazil. These four cables managed by Camtel are essential infrastructures for the connectivity of the country and the subregion. The partnership entered into by the two companies is expected to accelerate Cameroon's digital transformation process and will enable the country to position itself as a digital hub for the region.<\/p>\n

This would also allow for an increase in the fixed and mobile broadband internet penetration rate in Cameroon, which has stagnated at 22% since 2016, according to the World Bank subsidiary.<\/p>\n
