Gabon has joined the large, strong Commonwealth family\u00a0<\/span>of 56 states, without abandoning its French-speaking identity.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Gabon had many advantages for joining the Commonwealth. These included its commitment to climate change and sustainable development policies, its decades of stability and commitment to stability in the subregion and the continent, as well as Gabon's commitment to human rights and gender equality.<\/p>\n

However, membership in the Commonwealth does not bring anything in terms of economic exchanges or reduction of customs duties. Joining a union like the Commonwealth will above all allow Gabon to move closer to the economic model of countries with a shared past with the United Kingdom, where we see a dynamic that is markedly different from that of the former French colonies. <\/p>\n

Diplomatically, member states do not send ambassadors to each other, but rather "high commissioners" - who represent the government and not the head of state.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organization also provides an interesting forum for the governments of less wealthy members to negotiate bilateral agreements with more developed countries. Every two years, all Commonwealth heads of government meet at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, a meeting that has no stakes, except for the private discussions held on the sidelines of the summit. Furthermore, the Commonwealth plays an important role in the social and economic progress of its members. The Commonwealth Association therefore creates solidarity and international cooperation programs to help smaller member states.<\/p>\n
