The Central Africa Backbone (CAB) project aims to connect the countries of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) via high-speed telecommunications infrastructure. As part of this project, the Central African Republic is to connect with Cameroon and Congo, while Cameroon is to connect with Congo, Gabon, Chad, and the Central African Republic.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Cameroon is at the centre of the CAB, both to provide essential telecommunications links between the Central African states, to ensure their connection to the global fibre optic network and thus to enable the provision of high-speed Internet to the greatest number of people by relying at the lowest cost on the terminal station of the intercontinental submarine cable SAT-3 located in the economic capital Douala.<\/p>\n

The same extension concerns the 10 countries of the Central African Economic Community (ECCAS). The extension of the N'Djamena network to the Sudanese border at Adr\u00e9 will allow it to be connected to the Sudanese fiber optic network to interconnect with the East African Submarine Cables (EASSY). This link in the large TAB (Trans-African Backbone) network, thanks to an interconnection between Douala and Port Sudan, will allow part of the international traffic from Asia to the Americas and vice versa.<\/p>\n

The actual interconnection work, i.e. the projects initiated as part of the fiber optic interconnection between Gabon, Congo, and Chad, are fully finalized and operational. In November 2019, Gabon and Cameroon signed a memorandum of understanding for the interconnection of their high-speed fiber optic telecommunications networks. This interconnection is made possible thanks to the deployment in Gabon of a 411 km fiber optic network (Booue-Bitam-Eboro\/Meyo-Kye) with the support of the World Bank. In addition to the interconnection with CAB1 (Cameroon, CAR, and Chad) via Eboro, this backbone will also allow an interconnection with Equatorial Guinea via Meyo-Kie from the far north of Gabon to the border with Cameroon.<\/p>\n

As early as August 2020, the Congolese and Cameroonian governments began work on a fiber optic interconnection near their border, spanning approximately 350 kilometers. Completed in May 2022, this work was carried out as part of the Central Africa Backbone (CAB) project, financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), which aims to connect CEMAC countries to fiber optics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cameroon and the Central African Republic (CAR) are finalizing the interconnection of their fiber optic communications networks as part of the Central Africa Backbone (CAB) project.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cooperation between the two countries focuses on the technical, economic and legal aspects of the physical interconnection of the electronic communications networks of the two Central African countries. It also covers the coordination of capacities for routing traffic between the networks, the mutual provision of restoration channels for securing network communications, as well as the reduction of costs and tariffs for electronic communications services.<\/p>\n

The interconnection will contribute to greater digital inclusion in the CAR and Cameroon. It should also help bridge the digital divide between the two countries' border areas, allowing populations to access quality telecom services at more affordable costs. In addition, the interconnection will give ECCAS countries autonomy in terms of telecom infrastructure.<\/p>\n
