The Lomé-Cinkassé railway, which will be nearly 700 km long, aims not only to support the development and growth of the Togolese economy, but also to stimulate cross-border trade and the growth of hinterland economies.
Entrusted to the state holding company Togo Invest, the project, for which pre-feasibility studies have already been carried out, will also make it possible to develop effective and efficient logistics systems around the port and the railway line, to accelerate containerized transport to the Sahel countries, and to create several jobs.
Rail transport management falls under the purview of the Ministry of Transport and Rail (MTRAF) through the Directorate General of Transport (DGT), which houses the Directorate of Road and Rail Transport (DTRF). Togo has a 495 km meter-gauge railway network.

The network is currently only operated on the Tabligo – Dalavé section of the Togblekopé – Tabligo line for clinker or ore transport, and on the SNPT private line between Hahotoé and the specialized maritime terminal of Kpémé, i.e. over 37 km, for the transport of phosphates.
The Togolese railway network has not undergone any significant rehabilitation. In fact, there have been no passenger trains since the mid-1990s.
A vast regional program, led by ECOWAS and WAEMU, aims to rehabilitate and interconnect the railway networks of the ECOWAS region, including Togo's. This program, part of the ECOWAS railway plan, envisions 17 interconnection links by 2030, along with the rehabilitation of existing lines. Implemented through a public-private partnership, its objective is to alleviate road congestion and facilitate the development of the region's natural resources, particularly minerals.
