640px-Sheltam_33-200

The construction and operation of 10,000 km of railway embodies the vision of the Head of State, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, to see his country be the engine of development of the African continent by connecting the 26 provinces of the country and linking the DRC to its 9 neighbors.

This project stems from a collaboration agreement signed between the Congolese government and the Congolese public limited company Congo Railway (CR) concerning the concession of railway infrastructure and operations in the DRC. This 30-year concession covers 10,000 km of railway network, including 5,000 km of existing track and 5,000 km of new track to be built along eight corridors. The network is divided into three main axes: the western network, comprising Banana-Boma-Matadi-Kinshasa and Ilebo; the southern network, running from Sakania-Lubumbashi-Kolwezi-Ilebo with a branch line connecting Kolwezi to Dilolo; and the eastern network, running from Kamina-Kindu-Bukavu-Bumba. The latter will also have a branch line connecting Kananga, Mbuji-Mayi, and Kalemie.

Alongside this mega railway project, Congo Railway will develop 3 other projects: electricity production from photovoltaic and biomass power plants; the deployment and operation of fiber optics along the railway; real estate development, with the aim of transforming stations into real estate parks including shopping centers.

These networks aim to connect all 26 provinces of the country and link the DRC to its 9 neighbors. This project, a catalyst for economic diversification, will generate more than 100,000 direct jobs and hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs.

The consortium, which includes local and German investors, intends to raise $25 billion over a 30-year period. The allocated funds will be primarily used for the construction and modernization of 10,000 km of railway, 5,033 km of which are already managed by the Société Commerciale des Transports et des Ports (SCTP), the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer du Congo (SNCC), and the Chemins de Fer des Uélé (CEFU). These three companies, currently operating independently, will merge into a single entity called the "Chemin de Fer du Congo" (Congo Railway).

This project will undoubtedly be the cornerstone of the country's successful integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area. It is also the backbone that will allow the DRC to set the pace of regional and sub-regional trade.

The revival of the Kinshasa urban train

In May 2022, the government announced the relaunch of Kinshasa's urban rail service to combat the traffic congestion that frequently paralyzes the capital. Much of the land along the urban railway line has been encroached upon by unauthorized construction, and the government is currently considering practical measures to clear these areas of illegal occupants.

Kinshasa was built for a population of approximately 400,000, but today it has nearly 17 million inhabitants, according to the latest government statistics. The urban rail system will help alleviate traffic congestion in the city. This mass transit system will also require the construction of other road infrastructure better suited to urban traffic.

The Kinshasa metro project is expected to create 300 km of railway track within the city. The first phase covers the line from Central Station to N'djili International Airport (25 km), the second, the main arteries of Kinshasa (75 km), the third line will serve the outskirts of Kinshasa (90 km), and the final line will connect N'djili International Airport to the Maluku district (80 km). The Metrokin company is managing this project.
