In January 2020, the European Union (EU) granted a €35 million loan to the Republic of Madagascar, launching the Jirama Water III project. This funding is supplemented by a €30 million grant and a €30 million grant from the EU through the Africa Investment Platform (AIP). The remaining funding comes from the Republic of Madagascar (€6.5 million) and the non-profit organization Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), which has been actively engaged with Jirama for over 10 years to improve the performance of its water service delivery, with a €2.5 million grant.
Led by JIRAMA, the public water and electricity company, the project involves making priority investments in the drinking water supply system of the urban municipality of Antananarivo and its outlying areas. These investments concern both the production capacity and the transport and distribution of drinking water across the capital and its outskirts. Implementation will last three years, from 2021 to 2024.
