An initiative of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), this cable is supported by ten telecom operators: Emtel and CEB FiberNet of Mauritius; Canal + Telecom, SFR and Zeop of Réunion; Telco OI (Only) of Mayotte; Blueline, Airtel and Telma of Madagascar; and Belgacom International Carrier Services. They signed the construction and management agreement for this new very high-speed cable in 2016 and 2017. With a length of 3,500 kilometers, the METISS cable offers a capacity of 24 Tbps.
The result of a total investment of approximately €40 million, METISS was built by Alcatel Submarine Networks and Elettra TLC SPA. Once fully deployed, it is expected to be connected to other international cables. This cable will significantly improve connectivity and contribute to the advent of 5G technology in Madagascar.
