Gabon – The gas strategy for producing electricity

62915619_6ab22ff838_o

Gabon holds proven natural gas reserves of approximately 28.3 billion cubic meters, primarily in the form of associated gas. Currently making only limited use of these reserves, Gabon seeks solutions to further develop this resource.

One of the goals of the energy transition is to valorize flare gas and find a way to utilize a resource that is otherwise destined to be completely burned. During oil production, gas and water are present. Currently, the water is treated and returned to the environment, while the gas is flared. Gabon aims to optimize the use of natural gas within its borders in order to generate electricity from this flared gas. This transition will transform how oil fields are operated and allow for the capture of butane gas within these fields, enabling production in larger quantities and eliminating the need for imports, thereby reducing the cost of butane gas. Currently, Gabon imports approximately 901,000 tons of butane gas for household consumption.

35 billion cubic feet of gas represents roughly 200 megawatts of electricity. In Port-Gentil, 1001 TEUs of the electricity supplying the city is generated from gas from oil fields that was previously used for flaring. In Libreville, the goal is to reach 601 TEUs of the electricity needed by 2023, using flared gas.
