The mining potential is under-explored and under-exploited, although it is quantified in particular at 25 billion tonnes of iron reserves, 3.2 billion tonnes of potash reserves, 2.2 million tonnes of copper reserves and 531 million tonnes of phosphate reserves.

The country's main current exports include refined copper, cobalt, gold, and tin ore. Refined copper leads the exports, with over $2.5 billion in figures, followed by gold at $58.6 million and diamonds at $3 million.

A gypsum deposit has been discovered in the Bouenza department, in the south of the country. This valuable mineral is used to process the limestone that is abundant in the country, because it is itself used as an input in the manufacture of cement.

The mining sector also relies in part on the production of iron ore, phosphate, and potash. However, these activities remain largely underdeveloped, due to their often remote location from urban centers and their limited access to electricity. Since energy is essential for the extraction and refining of these minerals, electricity supply becomes non-negotiable.

Established in 2010, the Center for Geological and Mining Research (CRGM) is part of the government's strategic objective to develop the mining sector in the Congo. The CRGM is a center of excellence for geological studies and mining in Central Africa. Its work is accompanied by in-depth research to accurately establish the country's geology and stratigraphy. The CRGM operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Mines.
