The renewable energy project to electrify Pointe-Noire and its surrounding areas is underway. Its implementation aims to address the electricity deficit, particularly in areas where it is lacking. It will ultimately help reduce power outages and meet the legitimate expectations of a greater number of users. Inaugurated on May 22, 2023, the first phase—the thermal part of the plant—of the hybrid thermal/solar power plant project in Impfondo, capital of the Likouala department in the northeast of the country, has been delivered. The project, with a planned capacity of 3.4 MW, is being carried out by Produits de Construction de Brazzaville (PROCOB), a subsidiary of the Belgian company ABC Contracting, and financed by the Congolese public treasury. The total cost of the work amounts to 18.5 billion FCFA (nearly 28 million euros) divided into two phases. The first, the construction of the emergency and backup thermal power plant with an installed capacity of 3,400 kW with associated medium voltage (MV) evacuation lines, represents a cost of 4.5 billion FCFA (6 million euros). In a second phase, the cost of the construction of the 6,000 kWh (kilowatt peak) solar module power plant to serve as the main power plant, as well as the rehabilitation of the existing low and medium voltage networks and public lighting, amounts to 14.8 billion FCFA (22 million euros). The power plant will consist of 12,000 550-watt crystalline panels. Operation will be entrusted to the public operator E²C. The tidal turbine is being tested in Loubassa, in the district of Mbamou Island.
Congo has also just completed an ambitious project, with the creation of a solar panel assembly and production unit in Oyo in Cuvette.

A research center on renewable energies
Primarily dependent on fossil fuels, Congo has established a Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy Research, inaugurated on April 23, 2023, by President Denis Sassou Nguesso. Located in Oyo, 400 kilometers north of Brazzaville, this center was opened to address multiple electricity problems, and developing renewable energy is also a way to provide more energy to the population. Built on a 10,000 square meter site, it is the result of cooperation between Congo, the Italian oil group Eni, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Construction of the Oyo center lasted five years and its cost is estimated at 24 million euros, or more than 15.7 billion CFA francs.
The center's ultimate goal is not only to study energy diversification opportunities, but also to promote access to renewable energy. The Oyo Center will host researchers from Congo, as well as from other African countries and beyond.
