640px-Epab_Binguela

The agricultural sector remains one of the drivers of growth in Cameroon. It is a strategic sector for meeting the food needs of a growing population. The Cameroonian agricultural market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.51% over the period 2022-2027.

Due to its geographical location and ecological diversity, Cameroon has considerable potential for agriculture and livestock farming. Agriculture in Cameroon accounts for more than half of the country's non-oil export earnings and employs nearly 601,000 people. Approximately 901,000 rural Cameroonian households are employed in agriculture in some capacity, and about a third of them derive their livelihoods from exporting crops. Yet, overall yields are low, and food insecurity affects more than a fifth of rural households.

Food crops dominate the region's agricultural market. Maize is the most important food crop, followed by wheat and barley. Export crops are primarily bananas, cocoa, coffee, and cotton. Less traditional crops such as onions, green beans, and rice are also grown, produced either for local consumption or for export.

Government initiatives, such as the creation of agri-parks, and the introduction of projects, such as the IFAD project, should promote food crop cultivation in the country and improve the well-being of rural populations. Favorable government policies should stimulate the Cameroonian food crop market. Maize represents more than 801,000 metric tons of local food production in Cameroon. The Cameroonian food market has matured considerably since the deregulation of marketing. Producers, traders, and other intermediaries interact freely in the marketing of their products.

An agreement on the new Country Programming Framework (CPF) was signed in April 2022 with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The strategic priorities of the CPP 2022-2026 are broken down into 4 effects, 18 products, 163 interventions and an overall budget of USD 78,019,336 (FCFA 47,205,029,705), from budgetary allocations provided by the State, technical and financial partners in the rural sector and the FAO's internal resource mobilization potential.

This 2022-2026 program framework will not only enable the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also transform Cameroon's agricultural system to address food security challenges. With a population of 26.5 million, primarily young people, a diverse ecosystem, and rapid urbanization, Cameroon's socioeconomic potential remains underutilized, and the performance of the rural sector is still insufficient. Therefore, the Country Programming Framework supports the Cameroonian government's efforts to improve food and nutritional security, as well as the country's inclusive development.
