Cameroon – The impact of the African Cup of Nations

default

From January 9 to February 6, 2022, Cameroon hosted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the second time in its history. The state invested 500 billion CFA francs (almost 21.3 trillion of GDP), or 760 million euros, in sports infrastructure and regional development for the event. The expected benefits for tourism are anticipated.

Four new stadiums were built in Douala and Yaoundé, as well as in Bafoussam and Garoua. Two other stadiums, in Garoua and Yaoundé, were completely renovated and brought up to FIFA standards, along with about fifteen training pitches. The 801 hotels that accommodated the teams, journalists, and tourists were either new or renovated, representing a significant investment by both local and international hotel companies. Spaces were allocated to investors in the fan zones. As a continuation of the airport infrastructure modernization program launched in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations, the airports of Bertoua, Kribi, and Tiko were rehabilitated. The East, South, and Southwest regions will expand the existing network already available in the other regions: Littoral (Douala); Centre (Yaoundé-Nsimalen); and Northwest (Bamenda). North (Garoua); Far North (Maroua); West (Bafoussam) and Adamaoua (Ngaoundéré).

Reference

The Africa Cup of Nations also generated a strong micro-economy. Many Cameroonians invested in opening stalls around the stadiums. Cameroon is known worldwide as a football nation, home to the Indomitable Lions, but other sports are emerging, such as: deep-sea fishing off the coast; golf in Yaoundé and Tiko; climbing, with the annual ascent of Mount Cameroon; and horseback riding, with equestrian clubs in Yaoundé, Douala, and Garoua.
