856261307_d501ff70c4_c

With a budget of 8.15 billion FCFA, the post-Covid-19 recovery plan is structured around three components: creating an innovative and attractive tourism offer, encouraging local tourism and promoting Gabon as a destination.

According to the Directorate General for the Economy and Fiscal Policy (DGEPF), the tourism sector's turnover fell by 521,000 TEUs in 2020, as did other activity monitoring variables. The priority, therefore, is to diversify tourism to avoid dependence on a single activity and product.

The plan aims to increase the competitiveness of domestic and intra-regional travel by improving connectivity and facilitating travel to offer broader tours such as the beaches of Sao Tome, then the elephants and gorillas of Loango in Gabon and the lush forests of Odzala in Congo.

He also recommends encouraging companies to distribute holiday vouchers to their employees to stimulate demand after the crisis and support travel and tourism through employee benefits. The final point he proposes relies on fully leveraging the potential of social media and the millennial generation to once again promote the benefits of travel, particularly in domestic markets and especially to destinations heavily reliant on tourism and to the national parks that all Gabonese dream of visiting. It also involves empowering the most vulnerable populations and groups with the necessary skills to develop new tourism products to support rural areas and disadvantaged communities.

Promoting Gabon as a destination remains central to the recovery strategy recommended by experts. To this end, they plan to develop promotional offers for specialized travel and the domestic tourism market. This also includes the establishment of special funds to attract international conferences and events, such as festivals in the provinces. In 2021, the Gabonese Agency for the Development and Promotion of Tourism and Hospitality (Agatour) established a tourism information office at Libreville International Airport (ADL). To boost the sector, several projects have been implemented by the government in collaboration with Agatour. Support for stakeholders in this sector is also planned by the authorities. The government aims to achieve the objectives of the Emerging Gabon Strategic Plan, which seeks to make tourism a key driver of the Gabonese economy.

The implementation of the recovery plan is, however, contingent upon certain prerequisites: a census of sites, operators, and activities throughout the country; the development of innovative products (ecotourism, community-based tourism, gorilla habituation); the promotion and encouragement of short supply chains; the development and implementation of a health and safety protocol at tourist sites; and the development of areas of tourist interest. The cost of these recovery and acceleration measures for the sector is estimated at 8.15 billion FCFA.

Making Gabon, the most popular destination in Central Africa, an economic asset should allow the sector to contribute significantly to GDP.

A giant statue erected at the equator
South Korean international sculptor Yoo Young-ho will erect a giant statue in Gabon, at the center of the equator, to attract more visitors and tourists. This artist is known for creating statues that reach 6 meters in height, representing giants of the tourist landscape. The idea is to position the statue at the center of the equator, along the line in Gabon.
The site for this statue will soon be accessible, allowing work to begin on creating a site that meets international standards. The construction of this giant statue will contribute to the beautification of the area crossed by the equator in Gabon.
This contribution to the beautification of the area crossed by the equator will allow Gabon to attract an international population interested in authentic tourism.
