As the first African country to commit to the Paris Agreement in 2015, Gabon pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and place 301 million tonnes of its land under state protection to limit the extinction of the species that inhabit it. Gabon, whose economy relies heavily on the forestry sector, which represents 601 million tonnes of GDP (excluding hydrocarbons), has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 501 million tonnes by 2025, notably through sustainable land use. The country sequesters more than 100 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This makes Gabon one of the few countries in the world to have surpassed carbon neutrality and achieved carbon-positive status.

Gabon is the first country in the region whose efforts against deforestation Norway has chosen to reward. In 2019, a landmark agreement was signed, providing $150 million (€126 million) over ten years. At COP26, Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba emphasized that the "climate integrity" of nations was essential given the degraded state of flora and fauna and the new threats facing their territories, such as rising sea levels. Gabon chaired the African negotiating group in the lead-up to COP26.

In early 2021, the SCO (Space Climate Observatory) label awarded to a mangrove conservation project propelled Gabon to the status of a SCO Acceleration Committee (SAC). The goal remains to quickly transform the accelerator committee into SCO Gabon. The international Space Climate Observatory (SCO) initiative addresses the need for international coordination to accurately assess and monitor the impacts of climate change based on observations and numerical models. At the 6th European Union/African Union Summit, held in Brussels from February 17-18, 2022, President Ali Bongo Ondimba reaffirmed his commitment and his country's efforts to improve environmental protection.
