Agroforestry, as a technique, is the practice of sustainably and intelligently producing perennial and annual crops in the same area within a healthy environment. In Cameroon, the introduction of agroforestry techniques is yielding positive results in the cocoa sector, enabling production while preserving forest ecosystems. The cultivation of trees in and around cocoa orchards is being developed by the Green Innovation Centers for the Agri-Food Sector (ProCISA), an initiative supported by the German development cooperation agency (GIZ).

All safou, mango, avocado, date palm, and soursop trees planted in the Minkama plantations are systematically pruned at the base to allow the cocoa trees to flourish without fungal pressure. Following the initial pilot and test phases (2015-2016 and 2017-2018), the project is currently in its scaling-up phase (2019-2024), with a total budget of over 20 billion FCFA allocated for a total duration of nine years (2015-2024). This will diversify producers' incomes, ensure better living conditions for them, and preserve the environment for the well-being of present and future generations.

In the town of Nkong Nkeni, 150 km southwest of Yaoundé, an educational farm will be established. The pilot plantation of 14,000 trees is planned on a 12-hectare plot of land provided by a private donor. This research environment focused on cocoa excellence will serve as a unique training center for all members of cooperatives affiliated with the "Committed Chocolatiers" initiative. They will be taught best practices in endemic cocoa varieties, cocoa cultivation techniques, agroforestry management, and the valorization of plant waste.

Agroforestry is a solution for resilience to climate hazards, effective in eliminating hunger, reducing poverty while restoring the land and the environment.
