While in 1996 the Big Island was ten years behind in 2G technology, the gap was reduced to just one year for 4G in 2017. Today, Madagascar is taking the lead by becoming the very first country in Africa to deploy 5G in 2020.

Currently, the system is operational, but tests are also underway with ARTEC for the use of 5G on the n78 5G frequency band. The operator Telma, part of the Axian group, launched the system in partnership with Ericsson. The Malagasy operator promises to activate its commercial network in other provinces once the COVID-19 health crisis has subsided. 5G offers increased speed, reduced latency, improved availability, battery savings, and therefore greater profitability.
However, the Regulatory Authority for Communication Technologies (ARTEC) published a statement clarifying that the use of 5G services remains in an experimental phase in Madagascar as in many member countries of the International Telecommunication Union; and that in order to comply with the regulations in force, this license holder operator has received a temporary authorization for this purpose.
ARTEC also points out that in carrying out its regulatory mission, it supports research activities and collaborates to promote investments in the telecommunications and digital sectors.

Wifi hotspots in every region of the country
The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Development will deploy free WiFi hotspots across the country, an investment driven by the desire to improve access to web services for the poorest.
Free internet access will soon be available in the most frequented locations in each of the country's 22 regions. A total of 55 Wi-Fi hotspots are planned for installation in public spaces nationwide. Currently, two access points are already operational in the tourist town of Nosy Be. The goal is to allow as many citizens as possible to benefit from this new technology.
